The Truth Shall Make You Free

Free from what? That’s exactly what the Pharisees wondered (John 8:33). They said, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be made free’?” What they did not realize was that they were in bondage; not physical, but spiritual bondage. Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin” (John 8:34).

Spiritual bondage is the worst type of slavery. Everyone who has ever lived (except the Lord Himself) has been a slave to sin. The tragedy is that some people are living under sin’s sway right now, but, like the Pharisees, they don’t realize it. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 6:23).

Jesus offered freedom to the Pharisees that day, and His offer stands today. To deny that we fall prey to Satan’s snares is to deny truth:

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us (1 John 1:8, 10).

Sin is every man’s problem. Jesus is every man’s solution. Our loving Savior puts us in contact with the place where the freedom is found:

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free (John 8:32).
